I absolutely loved the flea market and always found amazing things there. I've been telling everyone about it! Will there be one last market before you close on November 1st? For example, the detective novel is a genre offiction."

Sand Point was special and everyone knew it. This was the longest running antique show Seattle ever had. But, the City of Seattle Kingpins got into a snit. The snit was created by the Seattle Department of Planning and Development (DPD), the Fire Marshal's office, Seattle's City Council and Magnuson Park officials were caught in the middle of the snit.
As we understand it, it was going to cost about $9 million to retrofit Hangar 30, which was built in the early years of WWII, and bring it up to the current Building Code. The park officials were able to arrange just over $8 million but, the"wise rulers" of the city council decided to use the $8 million for other purposes than upgrade the park.

And, the rest is history. Hangar 30 is being used nearly every day by the tennis club. It is used nearly everyday by some event, including occasionally, Seattle's stunt school, which has people swinging from the rafters; plus the managers of the park work every day in the side room of the hangar. DPD apparentlyhas little concern for their safety.

The chief complaint from DPD, as I understand it, isthat the hangar would come down during a large earthquake. Any earthquake, large enough, which may bringdown the hangar, would also bring down half of Seattle. So the reasoning of DPD officials is stupid. Magnuson Park was profitable and many cultural events have drowned. They no longer exist, like Sand Point Antique & Design Market.
Can Sand Point continue to exist? Perhaps, but not by us. The dealers who have found Sand Point to be profitable want the event to continue. So would we but, it cannot exist as it stands. I would suggest those dealers get to getherand plan the Phoenix to arise. Again from Microsoft Word Thesaurus: "in ancient mythology, a bird resembling an eagle that lived for 500 years and then burned itself to death on a pyre from whose ashes another phoenix arose. It commonly appears in literature as asymbol of death and resurrection." We want to help but, can no longer fund Sand Point. We tried for nearly a year to keep itgoing. But, we are tired.

I have mailed this to our online mailing list but, cannot afford to mail it to our postal mailing list (about 3,000 people). I guess word will get around and, as I just wrote, we want to help.
Finally, let Anita and I thank each and every one of you wonderful, buyers and sellers, for your years of help, support and advise. We will tearfully miss you.
Dennis

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sandpointantiquedesignmarket.blogspot.com/2011/10/sandpoint-antique-design-market-is.html' title='SandPoint Antique & All you have to do is to try and find a parking place in order to discover how true that is. So what is it that attracts such big crowds to these lines of tables? There are several reasons people flock to the flea market. We’ll look at ten of those reasons.
2. Bargain shoppers. This is generally the main reason people will five for going to flea markets. They are looking for bargains. That is the big selling point of flea markets. They’re similar to a giant garage sale with all the items organized on different tables. Some of the vendors are selling new items but many of them are selling used items in good condition.

3. Variety. You never know what you’ll find at a flea market but you can be guaranteed that the products will cover a wide spectrum. You’ll usually find clothes, housewares, décor items, tools, toys, books, antiques and crafts. A whole mini-mall made up of vendor tables. What is found on those tables one week will be totally different than what you might find another week. So the variety that exists is also always changing.

4. Collectables. Collectors of all types of items will be found roaming through flea markets. They’re looking for rare pieces and parts that can’t be found anywhere else. For auto enthusiasts it may be a hood ornament or another original piece for their current restoration project. Dinnerware collectors are looking pieces to finish out their sets. Art collectors are looking for that rare piece of pottery or a painting of great value that has yet to be discovered.

5. Antique lovers. Flea markets are a great place to find antique items. Antiquers are often found wandering through flea markets looking for items. Smaller pieces of furniture, hand tools, dolls, toys and dinnerware are common antique items that can be found at flea markets. The prices are also usually much less than what you’d pay at an antique store.

6. Bartering. Flea markets are one of the few places where you sometimes negotiate a trade with the vendors. You might have something that the vendor would be interested in taking in trade for one or more of his items. There are many stores where you can do that but it still happens at the flea market.

7. Negotiable prices. In other countries it is common to negotiate the prices of items rather than paying the price marked on an item. That isn’t done in most shops in the United States though. If the price tag says $25.00, then that is what you will have to pay. The cashier generally has no authority to lower the price for you. That is not the case at a flea market. Vendors at these markets are accustomed to people offering to pay a lower price than what is marked on items. Flea market shoppers who are comfortable with dickering on a price can come away with some great deals.

8. Socializing. Some people who attend flea markets enjoy the people as much or more than the shopping. Most vendors are friendly people who enjoy talking about their wares and plenty of other topics as well. There’s usually food vendors at the flea market as well. Food lines, of course, become the natural congregating spot where those attending the flea market can chat about what they’ve found or what they’re looking for.

9. Curiosity. Sometimes people go to flea markets just to see what’s there. Since the vendors may change from week to week and the wares being sold can also change, it can be interesting just to wander through your local flea market on a regular basis just to see what’s new.

10. People watching. Flea markets are great places for people watching. You will see such an assortment of characters at a flea market. Some of the characters will be behind the tables, working as vendors, and others will potential customers. You might see wealthy penny pinchers driving up in their Cadillacs or a homeless guy on his bicycle looking for a cheap pair of boots.

11. Handmade crafts. Crafters of many types are common vendors at flea markets. Handmade pine furniture, handcrafted jewelry of many varieties, one of a kind clothing items and many other items can be found peddling their wares. Often times you’ll also find the crafters working on new pieces while they tend their booth. That can be a great opportunity to see how things are made.
There are plenty of reasons that crowds of people flock to flea markets week after week. Usually people go for a combination of the reasons listed above.

From Sheryl Owen

"I Can't Believe It's a Flea Market."

"I Can't Believe It's a Flea Market."
When flea markets first started in Paris, "rag men" or "moonlight fishermen" as they were more poetically called, traveled the city at night, searching through the rubbish for items that they would then resell at the local market.

Unlike traditional flea markets, the brand new Sand Point Flea Market doesn't take place out-of-doors, it's held in the beautiful, historic Workshop in Hanger 30, at the Warren G. MAGNUSON PARK

“I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S A FLEA,” IS WHAT EVERYONE IS SAYING ABOUT SEATTLE’S NEWEST ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES VENUE, WHILE LOVING THE FLEA MARKET PRICES.

I can’t believe it’s a flea! That’s right! Seattle’s newest flea market is so unlike any other that this is the comment visitors are more than likely to make upon discovering this unique gem of a shopping experience. Opening Jan 15 & 16th for its first big weekend, the Sand Point Flea Market is that rare find – a small, convenient, top quality antique venue that presents the best of the best in a quaint, warm and intimate environment that will have shoppers coming back for more.

“It’s a flea market and it’s not a flea,” explains show founder, Dennis Eros, well-inown throughout the Seattle area for his Antique & Design shows at Sand Point’s historic Walter Magnuson Park.” In one sense, it represents the best of the flea market concept – low rents for the exhibitors, affordable prices for the consumer. At the same time, the Sand Point Flea Market has the same high quality merchandise that you would find at traditional antique venues.
“It was high time that Seattle had a regular antiques and collectibles flea market that would present top quality merchandise at prices that were more accessible to the public in these difficult economic times.. And, that is the strength of the Sand Point Flea Market. The two-day market will features over 27 select vendors well-known throughout the area for their eclectic mix of fine antiques at affordable prices. “We are very excited to be exhibiting at this new space,” comments Kathy Bartok, who has been a regular exhibitor at Eros shows for the past ten years.

“”The new flea market is located in a very special space that is rich in history—the Workshop in Hanger 30, where fighter planes were once stored during World War II. The windows are leaded glass, the sun pours in from the East and the park itself is rich in history – the site of an old naval base during World War II,” notes Bartok. “What could be more appropriate for an antiques shopping experience than a part that is rich in history!”

Though it is a flea market, you won’t find produce, cast-away clothing and items that were more than likely once consigned to the “circular bin.” Flea market in name only, the Sand Point Flea Market is true to the flea market spirit in that shoppers will find any number of bargains, but they will also discover much more – fine art pottery, mid-century furniture, vintage toys, architectural artifacts, garden antiques, beautiful glassware, vintage jewelry. “If a venue is billed as an antiques show, items may be doubled in price,” comments Bartok. “Not, so at a flea market. There is more latitude in terms of price.”

What is likely to sell well at the new show? Architectural artifacts, mid-century furnishings and decorative items, and also the “odd-ball” find. Bartok sold an old military teaching globe at a recent show and is on the look out for other unusual items to bring to the new event. Vintage jewelry is also popular these days as is painted furniture – a Bartok specialty. “The new show is a place where you can find wonderful home decorating items – fun drapes, nice chairs, an unusual chaise lounge, great lighting!

The two-day event opens with an Early Bird Special. We have booths availible.

ADORN YOUR GARDEN… YOUR HOME… AND YOURSELF
ALL UNDER ONE ROOF!
The Puyallup Home Show, January 7-9, 2011, Features a Special Antiques Section.
If you’re looking for cool 1950’s barware, an antique airplane propeller or airplane telephone (yes, there really were phones designed for use on airplanes!), or Art Deco jewelry that’s as glitzy and glamorous in its display as the pieces themselves -- you’re in luck! This year, the Puyallup Home Show, January 7-9, 2011, also features a special section devoted to antique furniture and jewelry, collectibles and art. This show has literally everything for the house and the garden that you could possibly imagine!
The Puyallup Home Show has always been a showcase for garden innovations and decorating trends. And 2011 is the eighth year for the show’s eagerly anticipated antiques section. Dennis Eros, the show's antiques promoter, says it’s been exciting to watch the progress of this mix of new and old at the show. It makes it a fun place for all -- antiques collectors, home show shoppers and garden aficionados!
To help you prepare to “shop ‘til you drop” for the hottest collectibles, here’s what you can expect to see in the antiques section:
Vintage bar glasses, cocktail shakers and other accoutrements of a well-stocked bar are evocative of a more glamorous era (think the Thin Man Comedy-mystery featuring Nick and Nora Charles: a former detective and his rich, playful wife. They solve a murder case mostly for the fun of it).
Extensive collection of glassware from the 1930’s and 1940’s, and bar-related items from the 1940’s and 1950’s.
Sure to catch your eye is the booth belonging to Eric Paul of Consortium Antiques -- a collector with a twist. In addition to traditional antiques, he also has several collection sub-specialties that are truly unique! First, there are his game room supplies, with an emphasis on slot machines from the early 1930’s to 1950.
Then, there’s Eric’s collection of toy sewing machines from the late 1800’s to 1950. These toy machines, which mimicked adult machines, were commonly used to teach young girls to sew. They range in price from $150 to $1,200 for an extremely rare red Singer machine – only 500 of them were made, all in France, so they’re very difficult to find here.
Finally, here’s another piece of history Eric’s booth will highlight – porcelain advertising signs from the 1920’s to the 1940’s! These signs, which most people think of as made from wood, were actually often made from porcelain. They range in price from $350 to $800, and look terrific displayed in groupings on a wall.
The Puyallup Home Show will feature a prized collection of name designer jewelry from 1910 to 1960, including such top sellers as Miriam Haskell, Eisenberg, Weiss, Kramer of New York and Joseph of Hollywood.
You will appreciate a collection of sterling silver charms, which never go out of favor among collectors. The charms are extremely popular, and are often bought by people who want to replace old charms from their childhoods, or who want to start charm collections for their children or grandchildren. Many of the charms are truly unique and feature moving parts. They range in price from $5 to $45, making it easy to start a collection. Look for animal and bug pins from the 1920’s to current day, cameos, gemstone pieces, Art Deco pieces, even Southwest and Native American pieces. Talk about a bounty!
Show hours are 10am-8pm on Friday and Saturday; Sunday 10am-5pm. Admission is $6 for adults; children 17 and under free. For more information call: 360 978-4154.
Do you want to sell at the Puyallup Home Show? That's easy. A 10 ft x 10 ft booth is only $160 for the three days, complete with electricity. Drive up to your booth and drop off your "stuff" on Wednesday and Thursday, January 5 & 6 8 am to 8 pm. You do not have to be a dealer to sell; call us and we will help you with everything you need.

An Entire Show In Six Minutes!

Please Help Save the Sand Point Antique & Design Market in Hangar 30. We have been advised we may not be able to hold our event in 2011. Please contact the mayor of Seattle, Mayor Mike McGinn's, and the city consul and voice your objection to close the hangar except for their precious few. From 50 to 100 dealers can have sales for thousands of dollars during our event; look at all the tax money being deposited in the city coffers. We bring hundreds and hundreds families and friends together for about 8 hours exchanging money, fun and a sense of community, which ebbs into the city.

And the Sand Point Antique & Design Market is just one event, which brings cash into the City of Seattle; extrapolate these thousands with about 32 other vendors all producing cash for the City.

From my understanding closing building 30 has been an ongoing dispute between building officials, Fire Marshal and park officials. First the good news our next Sand Point Antique & Design Market is Sunday, December 5th., with set up on Saturday, December 4th.

The bad news is this may be our last show. On information and belief, the building department in Seattle has told the park that without a major refit to make the building safe in an earthquake they will no longer permit the use of building 30 (Hangar 30) and the Fire Marshal has stated unless the park build more exits they will no longer issue Fire Permits; these two events have effectively shut all events in Hangar 30; except for about four events a year, reserved for the longest running events coming out of Hangar 30; this does not include us.

I do not understand why they will allow some usage but not all. Within the last 6 years Anita and I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop, promote and continue the first viable, continuing antique show in the City of Seattle; the longest running antique show in the City of Seattle. This will be a devastating blow, not only to our own income and to you, our antique vendors. Four-fifths of our personal income comes from the Sand Point Antique & Design Market. There is a certain probability that the loss of income from our event at Marnuson Park will force us into bankruptcy. One cannot expect one to lose 4/5ths of their gross income and survive in one piece. Anita and I are totally devastated by this information.

If enough of us can storm the castle walls we may be able to get this changed.

Anita and I have a greater fear of going out of business than dying in an earthquake in Hangar 30.

This action, or lack thereof, will impact hundreds of our dealers and thousands of our buyers in just one year. Considering the other events in Hangar 30 will impact hundreds of thousands of people from not only the City of Seattle but, the rest of Washington State and other states on the West Coast; people who have for years used Hangar 30 as a cultural venue.

I ask each of you to contact the city "fathers" your dismay at this issue. Perhaps we can get them to change their "collective minds." Personally, I do not understand why they can allow 4 events and not 40 events. Come join us Octover 10th. Early buyers 8 am to 10 $10. General Admission 10 am to 4 pm $6. $5 with a printout of this page or postcard (10 am to 4 pm only).

Anyone can sell at Sand Point. We are constintly finding new dealers to add to our list of unusual and unexpected displays.

A number of collectors are starting to display and sell with us. This is good for a number or reasons. This allows buyers who want to cull their collections but, do not want to wholesale their treasures. Setting up at Sand Point allows collectors to sell their objects at a retail, or near retail prices. Not only does this give a selling advantage to collectors but this exposes collectors to dealers and other collectors. Sometimes when collector meets collector a nice exchange of objects can happen through trades.

Sand Point has become one of the most unusual antique selling enviornments on the West Coast. As we like to say:

SOPHISTICATED and WHIMISCAL
Antique garden furniture and other art, old and loved linens, French Country, planters, primitives, Native American art, used and unabused furniture, estate and consume jewelry. Find the unpredictable and the
unexpected.

Our Market is part design, part therapy and … pure pleasure. You are going to find an ambush of delights, Collectiblities, Inconceivabilities and PERHAPS — even romance. It could happen!

Sand Point Antique & Design Market Sunday, August 29th. 2010 A big winner.

What'a weekend. Anita and I started running the Sand Point Market in 2005. We have consistently held 6 shows a year; this show and sale was the best show ever.

Let me put it a different way -- 30 shows in 5 years and this was the best show -- ever. In the middle of a recession!
Due to a scheduling conflict we had to share part of Hangar 30 with the International Stunt School. Now this was fun; watching all of these young folks swinging, jumping, fighting and all manner of stuff associated with movie or TV shows.
We are now accepting reservations for the October 10th show. $130 for a 10 ft x 12 or 11 ft booth + $5 for the City of Seattle license. You do not need to be a dealer to sell at Sand Point. If you are culling your collection or just have "too much stuff" you can set up. Don't know how to price your "stuff?" We can help. Certainly, there are many dealers at the show who can also help you price your objects.
How much can you make? Well, on the 29th we had people who sold $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 and more. I heard more than one dealer boast of selling more than $5,000 and two exceeded $10,000. Not bad for a one day antique sale.
More than a few buyers said that this was the best show for bargains. There were two notable designers who spent more than $5,000 each.

Thanks to everyone, buyers and sellers all, you made this possible. Thank you again and we will see you October 10th.

Dennis

Hi Dennis, I attended the August 29th show, "WOW", keep it going!

Last Sunday's Sand Point Market was indeed "WOW." Record sales for nearly everyone. "Fantastic buys" is how one person put it. She was not talking about money, just objects.

I was collecting money when I heard at least three designers call other designers and demand they get to the Market. One caller said: "This is the best antique sale 'ever'." And! It was!

You do not have to be a dealer to sell. We just got our computer back, except it was not our iMac; it was a PC. The computer hospital as able to save 1,300 files but only in PC format. I use a PC but, Anita, has never used anything but a Mac. She had a lot to learn.

Then, after she understood the computer, many of the files we were given were duplicates; 100's of them. Then some of the files had one name, an unused file or a file, which contained 38 names.

Eventually, we were able to restore our dealer list and nearly 3,000 buyer's but, they go back, basically 10 years. His works reflect the influence of Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini. He worked in a series of media: engravings (like his Calumny of Apelles about 1500, after Mantegna), oil paintings (for example, The Massacre of the Innocents about 1500, National Gallery, London), and – in a medium closer to that of his family background of glass painting – stained glass (for SS Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, about 1515).

The date of the earliest known niello proof upon paper is 1452. The work of the Florentine engravers, however, was almost at once surpassed in Venice and elsewhere in North Italy by Andrea Mantegna, Girolamo Mocetto, Giovanni Batista del Porto, and others. In Marc Antonio Raimondi, who wrought under the guidance of Raphael, and reproduced many of his works, the art reached its highest point of the earlier period, and Rome became the centre of a new school, which included Marco da Ravenna, Giulio Bonasone, and Agostino de Musis.

Girolamo Mocetto was a reproductive engraver who made prints after compositions by Mantegna, but also by the Venetian painters Jacopo Bellini, Giovanni Bellini, and other artists working in the late 15th and early 16th centuries in Venice.

Rare 16th and 17th Century Prints at Sand Point June 6

Jusepe de Ribera b. January 12, 1591 d September 2 1652.

The "young Spaniard working in the manner of Caravaggio" was causing the Bolognese artists concern, Lodovico Carracci wrote admiringly of Jusepe de Ribera in 1618. Ribera, second son of a Valencian shoemaker, had only been in Italy about four years and was already making a splash.

After working in Rome and Parma in 1616, Ribera settled in Naples, where he spent his career. Ribera's art combined knowledge of the Carracci and Caravaggio with Spanish realism and vigorous, scratchy brushwork. He practiced precise draftsmanship and used working-class models. His large output consisted mainly of religious works, including harrowing scenes of martyrdom that laid the foundation for the Neapolitan painting tradition one critic called "the poetry of the repulsive."

After 1632 Ribera's paintings became softer in tone and more classical in feeling. His palette lightened, perhaps through Venetian or Flemish influence, and he became primarily concerned with the expression of spirituality. Throughout the decade, he received major commissions from the Spanish king and the Neapolitan viceroys. By the 1640s Ribera was wealthy and operated a large workshop. His influence was extensive, inspiring artists such as Francisco de Zurbarán, Salvator Rosa, and Luca Giordano.

Rare 16th and 17th Century Prints at Sand Point June 6

Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremberg, Germany on May 21, 1471, the second of eighteen children in the family of a master goldsmith of some repute. Fifteen of the children of this family died at an early age and Durer's mother was often sickly, especially in the last years of her life. Although his father was not pleased with his artistic ambitions, at the age of fifteen, Durer was apprenticed to a painter.

Durer was probably the greatest artist in German history. By adopting the new forms of the Italian quattrocento and connecting them to the already robust tradition of the German print, he almost single-handedly provoked the Northern Renaissance. For all-around inquisitiveness, he was surpassed only by his older contemporary, Leonardo da Vinci. Durer was interested in everything, from the nap of rabbit's fur to the theory of human proportion. His graphic work was a sustained paean to the diversity of the world. His curiosity was insatiable, and it drove him to constant journeying; Durer was the first cultural tourist. He seems to have been the first great artist to act on the idea that response to different cultures is part of the creative process itself. Even the disease that ruined his health, malaria, was a souvenir: a mosquito bit him when he ventured into the salt marches of Zeeland to draw yet another marvel, a dead whale.

Durer started traveling in 1490; he was not quite nineteen. He had spent four years apprenticed to a master painter and engraver, Michael Wolgemut; he now set off to Colmar, to work under Martin Schongauer. But he took two years reaching Colmar, and when he did, Schongauer was dead. His restless wanderings across Europe included two trips to Venice and were capped by a year-long sojourn in The Netherlands, where he was a celebrity among celebrities, moving in a nimbus of fame through a circle that included Erasmus himself.

In moving from Nuremberg to Venice, Durer reversed a whole direction of cultural priorities. The center to which German artists had previously looked were Bruges and Ghent in Flanders and the northern Gothic style shaped there by artists like the Van Eycks and Hugo van der Goes. What fascinated Durer was Italian humanism and all that flowed from the discovery of classical antiquity. But in fact, the trips to Venice did not radically change his style. They did give him confidence when Giovanni Bellini, the Venetian artist he most admired, became his friend. He said, "Here I am a gentleman, at home I am a parasite.", from which it appears that Durer knew more about the business of being a successful expatriate than most travelers ever discover.

Durer married Agnes Frey in 1494, visited Venice that year for the first time, returned there again in 1505 and stayed until 1507. Meanwhile he built a great house which still stands on the castle hill in Nuremberg. Durer was almost piously devoted to his parents and had many warm friendships. Among them was that of a patrician, witty, intellectual widower-playboy named Willibald Pirkheimer who became his special intimate.

But he was the most indifferent, rudest of husbands. Without compunction he used his fifteen-year-old wife's dowry to set up his graphics workshop and used her to sit in markets and fairs selling his prints. He wrote coarsely of her. He usually traveled without her and many years later, when he did take her on a trip to the Netherlands, he allowed her to accompany him to only one of the many banquets given in his honor and when they stayed at home, she was left to eat upstairs with the maid. Obviously in his perception, she was a provincial bore who could not keep intellectual and social pace with her agile husband.

He was a popinjay, dressing in the most chic Italian fashions. He cherished and believed every kind of attention and pandering compliment, yet he acknowledged the likelihood that he was being scoffed at behind his back. He longed to be considered a gentleman.

The success of Durer's work led the way for other German artists, Matthias Grunewald, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Holbein the Younger and Martin Luther's great friend, Lucas Cranach, all of whose work made Germany for half a century the leader of the Northern Renaissance. In Durer's day, art works were valued like drygoods, by the size, hours of labor and the material. As a new humanist, he protested that as art represented man more accurately, it approached divinity more closely. So a tiny drawing, if divinely inspired, could be more artistic than a giant altarpiece. He became one of the first to sign and date even his most incidental drawings. His chop, a reminder of his early goldsmith's training, was known across Europe. He died in Nuremberg on April 6, 1528.

Written by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California.

Sources:
Time Magazine, November 12, 1965
Aline Saarinen in McCall's magazine
Robert Hughes in Time Magazine, July 12, 1971
From the internet, Geocities.com/durerweb/
From the internet, boglewood.com'cornaro/xdurer

This biography from the Archives of AskART

Rare 16th and 17th Century Prints at Sand Point June 6

Honore Daumier was born in Marseilles, France on February 26, 1808. He was the son of a Marseille glazier who wrote a little poetry on the side and who thought so much of his own talent that in 1816 he decided to move himself and his family to Paris. Over the next dozen years, the family lived in eight different apartments in Paris. There was never enough money, and the experience of hard times would mark Daumier for life.

At the age of twelve, Honore became a messenger boy for a process server's office and then a clerk for a bookstore - jobs that opened up to him every corner of Paris. He sketched everything he saw and finally started studying art with an academician whose idea of instruction was to have his pupils copy plaster casts hour after hour. "This is not life," said Daumier, and he struck out on his own.

A year later, the boy enrolled in the Academy Suisse, an informal school where students could draw from the model in the mornings and still hold down jobs. Though Daumier was never a flamboyant bohemian, he was soon part of a group of young artists from the school, some of whom became lifelong friends. If the teenager didn't have the money for oils or canvas (presumably why so little of his student work survives), in studios and cafes he drew the way other people talked. Daumier was on his way to becoming one of the greatest draftsman who ever lived.

The lithograph was a comparatively new art in those days, but it quickly became Daumier's bread and butter. He began turning out political cartoons for an ardently antiroyalist magazine called La Caricature. One cartoon portrayed King Louis Philippe as Gargantua gobbling up every last sou in France. For such indiscretions Daumier spent six months in prison. He was the first French artist to get to the hall of fame because the people liked his little drawings, instead of the aristocracy liking his big salon paintings.

No sooner was he out again than he started producing more cartoons for another magazine. In 1846, at the age of thirty-eight, he married a young seamstress called Didine and settled down in an apartment on the Quai d'Anjou. There, in a bare attic studio, using crayons until they were so worn he could no longer hold them, and whistling the latest music-hall tunes, Daumier turned out lithographs of arrogant aristocrats, greedy landlords, sour-faced men and nagging wives, sinister lawyers and pompous judges. Sometimes his humor was gentle; occasionally it was savage; it was always perceptive.

Daumier made lithographs, 3958 in all, until he went blind at sixty-five. But all along he was painting, though no more than a handful of his canvases were shown in public before the last year of his life. Compared with the more spectacular romantics, he seemed rough and unfinished. Nor did he understand the work of the new impressionists. He was a superlative draftsman whose brush drew spare and strong, and whose preoccupation was people. No matter how ordinary their acts, Daumier gave drama and dignity to their lives. He was ruthless in his candor, but his candor was born of concern.

The painter Daumier was a rotund gentle person who cared far more for others than for himself. There were never any extras for Daumier. A year before he died at seventy, a group of friends, led by Victor Hugo, arranged a show of his paintings. It closed dismally with a deficit of 4000 francs.

Daumier's most celebrated work was a series of 'Robert Macaire' published in the 'Charivari'. His graphic works are unsurpassed for clarity, expressiveness, truth to type and nervously rhythmic life. He did not draw directly from nature, but from human nature, and this he did as fully as any artist who ever lived. But he was thought for years unworthy to occupy a single foot of space at the official Salon's shows. One Saturday night at Theodore Rousseau's barn in the village of Barbizon, a gathering that included Corot, Millet,Daubigny, Diaz and Bayre, along with Daumier himself, voted to form their own anti-Salon Independent Artists' Society.

No one ever represented with greater truth the varied type of Parisian character. He became blind in 1877, then died suddenly in 1879 of a stroke at Valmondois (Seine-et-Oise) in a house given him by Corot, the landscape painter.
Compiled and submitted August 2004 by Jean Ershler Schatz, artist and researcher from Laguna Woods, California
Sources:

Time Magazine, July 7, 1961 and October 1, 1979
Peter Plagens in Newsweek, March 8, 1993

Pete Hamill in Art and Antiques Magazine, February 1993.

Next Market: June 6th

Only two weeks until the next Sand Point Market!

Are ya' ready for summer?

Join us Sunday June 6th for another fabulous gathering of antique, vintage, and collectible merchandise. Find out at the upcoming Puyallup Home Show, January 8-10, 2010 at the Western Washington Fairgrounds.

Head to the antiques section with your favorite old lamp, cherished candy dish, beloved childhood cast iron truck; or unusual, ornate clock. Learn from an expert just what it is really worth. It’s the next best thing to being a part of the popular Antiques Road Show –yet a far more accessible, mini-antiques Road Show in a setting where you can also get the latest renovation and home improvement advice, information, and view the newest home innovations for 2010.

You just might discover that the well-loved heirlooms and objects that you once labeled “throw out,” can be the answer to paying off some of those holiday bills and cover Santa’s tab. Plus, you’ll be participating in something very worthwhile. Eros Promotions, founder and organizer of “Antiques at the Puyallup Home Show” believes that giving and caring shouldn’t end with the holiday season. There is no end to hunger. $2 of every $7 appraisal fee will be donated to the local food bank.

The Antiques section of the Puyallup Home Show has been a real draw since its inception. Here you will find both fine antiques that will rejuvenate your home, along with popular collectibles that will have you entertained for hours. “Antiques are enjoying a resurgence of popularity in response to today’s pressing environmental concerns,” notes Dennis Eros, founder of Eros Promotions. “And, it’s the youth of American that have become the new advocates and buyers.”

“Antiques are a beautiful, smart way to go green. Instead of opting for snap plastic furniture that falls apart not long after you buy it and therefore, contributes to the pollution of the environment, young concerned buyers are turning to the craftsmanship and longevity of antiques.” The Puyallup Home show’s antique section offers furnishings to suit everyone’s tastes – from Shabby Chic, country cozy, warm and rustic to sleek Moderne.

But it is in the collectibles area that this show really shines. It is a strong resource for such in-demand collectibles as Native American Art. While prices for Indian ceremonial masks, head-dresses and pottery have gone sky high – a mask recently went for a stunning half-million dollars at a French auction-- there are many beautiful Indian baskets, beadwork and rugs that are infinitely affordable --in the $50-$1,000 price range. Native Americans were actually the first conservationists – showing a remarkable respect and concern for the environment. Unfortunately, it has taken us a long time to heed their example. Buying the beautiful artwork and crafts made by such local tribes as the Puyallup is another potent “green” reminder to live more in harmony with the environment.

Purchasing antique fabrics is another form of green recycling. People are using vintage fabrics for quilts, drapes, upholstery and even doll clothes. When it comes to workmanship, modern day fabrics cannot compare to the often hand-loomed fabrics. Plus, antique fabrics can be half the price of similar fabrics produced today. Early wooden pull toys, cast iron toys and games are also favorites, finding a new audience of young collectors who are using these toys to decorate dens, offices and children’s rooms.

Vintage bar glasses, cocktail shakers and other accoutrements of a well-stocked bar are evocative of a more glamorous era and can be found at the upcoming show. Cocktail shakers have a fascinating history: Although the early shakers were utilitarian in design, in later years they became symbol of sophistication. In the 1920’s, at the height of the Jazz Age, gin martinis were served from sterling silver shakers by the rich, while the less affluent made do with glass or nickel-plated shakers. The real explosion of cocktail shakers occurred after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, with companies manufacturing unusual shapes – bullets, zeppelins, airplanes, milk cans, animals, sporting equipment, bar bells, bowling pins, even Lady’ Legs! These are highly collectible today.

Show hours are 10am-7pm, Friday and Saturday, Sunday 10am-5pm. Admission is $7 for adults; $6 for seniors and military; children 17 and under free.
Contact: Eros Promotions at (360) 978-4154, or visit www.puyalluphomeshow.net, where you will find a printable coupon for $1 off of an adult admission.

780 GREENWICH STREET, 1M
NEW YORK, NY 10014
212-691-7297 TEL
646-336-0644 FAX
INFIELDLIA@AOL.COM
On Behalf Of: Eros Promotions
Contact: Leigh Infield Associates
212/691-7297
For Immediate Release
Posted by Dennis Eros

The New York Armory Shows Imperiled, While Other Fairs Adjust. From the New York Times.

On Friday, December 18, 2009 the New York Times reported that another “Armory Show Imperiled, While Other Fairs Adjust.” The annual Works on Paper fair, which was to take place at the Park Avenue Armory in February, is the latest victim of the recession, Samford L. Smith, the veteran fair organizer who started the show in 1988, has postponed it this year.”

Mr. Smith said, “I simply couldn’t get the quality or the quantity of dealers. It’s the economy, and it’s the enormous explosion of fairs all over the world.”

However, in another antique and modern art venue in Miami Beach this month, Art Basel Miami Beach, dealers said they noticed that the market had picked up, at least for contemporary are. “But fair organizers, along with dealers specializing in everything from old masters to Impressionist and Modern art, have a more sober story to tell.”

“For instance, Mr. Smith said, dealers are short of cash these days and unable to replenish their inventories. Another issue at the armory is the cost of space. The Park Avenue Conservancy formally took over management of the building, a crenelated (sic) red brick landmark between 66th and 67th Streets, from New York State in December 2007, and it has increased the rent. The cost is now $30,000 a day, three times what it once was.”

Another armory show, the high-end International Fine Art Fair, which is timed to coincide with the Man impressionist and Modern art auctions in New York, may also be canceled. ‘We are currently inconsultation with the exhibitors,’ said Magda Grigorian, a spokeswoman for that event’s organizer, Haughton International Art and Antique fairs, ‘and no final decision has yet been made.”

Still on schedule, however, is the Art Dealers Association of America’s annual Art Show of postwar and contemporary art. But rather than taking place in February, the show will be held March 3 through 7, timed to the Amory Show (March 4-7), which despite its name is held at Piers 92 and 94, at 12 Avenue and 55th Street, in Clinton.

“I’m a big believer that more is more,’ said Lucy Mitchell Inness, president of the Art Dealers Association of America. “Having critical mass creates a buzz, and that’s a good thing.”

The Art Show will feature 70 dealers, the same as last year. The Armory Show, however, will expand, with 267 galleries, 41 more than last year. But some dealers have been asking for smaller booths, Katelijne De Backer, director of that event, said.

This year the show will introduce Armory Focus, a section feathring a city or community that is especially vibrant. The inaugural section will center on Berlin, with 21 dealers from there. “You have to keep changing to stay the same,: Ms. De Backer Said.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sandpointantiquedesignmarket.blogspot.com/2009/12/new-york-armory-shows-imperiled-while.html' title='The New York Armory Shows Imperiled, While Other Fairs Adjust. What a weekend!

We nearly had a full house at Sand Point and the buyers did an excellent job of plying their craft teaching antique dealers what to buy. They do this by buying what we sell. In addition, sell we did this weekend at the Old Sand Point Naval Station in Hangar 30.

Cash flowed in all directions as buyer after buyer lugged furniture and smalls out the door and came back repeatedly. One booth nearly sold out everything.

Anita and I want to thank all of the dealers and all of the buyers for helping make this one Sunday, December 6th at Sand Point the best sale we have had for two years. The show looked beautiful. Design Market August 2009

“Did you do good?” Dennis asked? “No!’ the dealer answered. “I did sensationally good.”

At 8 am the doors opened to the Early Buyers; not only were the buyers buying, they were in a buyer’s mood. Objects disappeared from dealer’s shelves as with blinding speed. Cart loads upon cart loads left the show with a buyer attached to the cart’s handle. “It’s like magic.” one buyer commented after she caught her breath. “I have never seen such displays as are here.” Another buyer quipped: “You are going to continue this show, aren’t you?” and then added: “I have bought such wonderful prices.” Another buyer added: “I love this show; I can’t wait for the Christmas Show.”

From a promoter’s stand this show was one of perfect dimensions. Everything came together in precise order and so many booths were so sensational, one barely knows how to start describing them...

Retreat by KENNEDY|Kennedy Design has masterly merged black and white and grays together. Their Swedish-style booth was just wonderful, and the unique furnishings they create left with happy new owners, as did smalls and lamps.

Debi Burton had a double booth filled to overflowing with knickknacks, garden art and what have you, all appealing in design and décor usages. I watched as objects left her booth and she scurried over to fill the vacant spot with two, three or more items as she built each new diorama.

DeWayne Lumpkin came to us after the Seattle Gift Show. This was his first time at Sand Point, I do not think it will be the last Market he does with up. He had these great vintage United Kingdom graphic bus rolls fresh from England; these are route signs from trolleys and double-decker buses in the UK. You can visit his works at: DeWayne's portfolio: http://www.coroflot.com/public/individual_details.asp?individual_id=188026

Susan Wheeler (we have not seen her for some time) shared three booths with DeWayne. As always Susan sets a fine table. She purchased a great folk art battleship. It was the find of the year (See photos below).

Julie Whinihan was back with her nearly Victorian style booth. Julie is the one with all of the Victorian ladies high top button boots.

Jerry Agbayani brought four delightful clocks, one dating from before the Civil War and two decorative Victorian kitchen clocks. Another clock he brought has a clock face illustrated in Arabic. His clocks all sold early in the show.

Other dealers who attended the Sand Point Antique & Design Market as sellers were: Bob and John from Cool Junk, Wayne Anderson, Bobbie Maine Lensch from Bobbie & Chuck’s Farm, Dawn Oscar, Trudy Mc Cleary, Linda from LuLu's, and Jo Marie Richmon was a first time seller. She makes these delightful little skirts out of vintage fabrics.

In closing this view of the Sand Point Antique & Design Market for August 30, 2009 I want to thank all of the buyers and all of the dealers who got together in perfect harmony in the best show and sale we have had in two years.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sandpointantiquedesignmarket.blogspot.com/2009/08/sand-point-antique-design-market-august.html' title='Sand Point Antique & I didn't sell much but I bought 3 hand made quilts and one huge machine sewn quilt for $10. As I left the market I filmed this car fire at 81st and South Tacoma way. Now then, you would think, would you not, that one would not want to drive in the lane next to this car which might explode at any time. But, no! Dozens and dozens of cars not only drove by this car even stopping for the traffic light, so for 3 or 4 minutes cars were sitting next to this car even when the flames were sky high. This was, an hour earlier, a nice 1970 Continental.

Brimfield trip May 2010

What IS the Brimfield Show, Anyway?

The Brimfield Antiques Show began in the 1950's and has become the largest and best-known outdoor antiques show in the country. Running along Rt. 20 for a distance of perhaps a half-mile and perhaps 500' or more, back on each side of the highway, the Brimfield Show is a huge, vast undertaking, filled with thousands of dealers dealer’s over the course of the week, selling everything from the finest antiques to 'yard junk', requiring a day or two to see everything there is to see. Food courts and rest facilities abound, and the Shows are filled with hidden treasures and the 'right kind of people', creating a safe and fun environment for everyone, children included. Shows are patrolled by uniformed and undercover police, and rarely is there any trouble of any kind.

Brimfield is a quaint, picturesque rural New England town, home to 3,000 residents. Founded in 1731, (the year before George Washington was born), the town's 35 square miles are surrounded by apple orchards, horse farms, and wooded hills in an area known as the Pioneer Valley, and Foothills of the Berkshires.

During show-times, the town's population balloons to over 250,000 visitors and over 5,000 dealers for the 6 days the Show operates. The Show has a carnival-like atmosphere, appropriate for all ages, where good vibes prevail, (and few, if any, problems ever present themselves).Dealers come from all over the world, as do visitors. From millionaire world-famous rock stars and movie stars to the local resident from down the street, the Show is a Mecca for serious and casual collectors of all kinds of antiques. A few of the Fields require an entrance fee on the initial opening, usually $5.00-10.00, which tends to be waived later in the day. Most fields do not have any entrance fee, and generally, you can move freely from field to field.

Brimfield link: http://www.brimfieldshow.com/showpr~.htm
Show promoters: Brimfield Acres North, BRIMFIELD BARN, BRIMFIELD'S HEART-O-THE-MART, CENTRAL PARK, COLLINS APPLE BARN, Crystal Brook, MIDWAY ANTIQUES AND DEALERS' CHOICE, FRANCESCO'S ANTIQUE SHOW, GREEN ACRES, J&J PROMOTIONS, Hertan's Antique Shows, THE MEADOWS, MAY'S ANTIQUE MARKET, MAHOGANY RIDGE, NEW ENGLAND MOTEL, QUAKER ACRES, SHELTON ANTIQUES, STEPHEN'S PLACE, STURTEVANT'S.
Get a Brochure Here http://www.brimfieldshow.com/show_brochure.htm

Ok, now we know what Brimfield is, how do we get there and return?

This is what we propose: Group together and purchase round trip tickets. Once there we will have a semi truck and driver waiting for us. As we purchase items each dealer will mark and pack their items in the truck. When Brimfield is over, we fly home and within about a week the truck should arrive in the Seattle or Tacoma area and we get our things and go home. Simple! Cost of tickets, truck and driver? I don’t know yet. We may even need to rent a bus to ferry us between Brimfield and our hotel.

So what do you think? Check out the poll on our sidebar, and give me your feedback. Thanks!
Dennis

Antiques By The Bay

I went to Alameda, CA last weekend to attend Antiques by the Bay. In fact….

Ethnic art makes an impact in home décor this season. "Hand carved, hand-made items are very much of the moment," says Dennis Eros, who will be exhibiting an exceptional selection of Asian art. The Eros’ will also be bringing superb examples of Japanese craftsmanship in the form of miniature sculptural pieces called Netsuke. These exquisitely detailed 17th-19th century carvings – so tiny they can be held in the palm of the hand – were first created as functional toggles to hold a pouch on a kimono sash. Japanese artisans exercised astonishing creativity within the confines of these tiny forms. Other special pieces sure to please both decorators and collectors alike: a superb 10” ivory carved bust of Buddha from the turn of the previous century, and a 4x6 foot silk dragon rug from the middle twentieth century. Eros will also display and array of original JJ Audubon, hand-tinted, prints which were made before 1840. These prints of The Birds of America” and the ever popular “Quadrupeds of America” are fairly rare and lavishly colored by hand about 1840..

"American Indian material is the original folk art of America, and when you buy it, you're buying a part of history -- the skills of a vanishing world," says Mr. Eros, who has been a collector of American Indian artifacts for more than four decades. "The naturalistic philosophies of the Indians, who saw nature as an extension of man, rather than subservient to him are part of the attraction of Native American art work. We live in a technological world, and American Indian artifacts make people feel more centered. They use the optics of these pieces for meditation and relaxation."

Decorators who are primarily buying large objects and they will find a wonderful, elaborate Potlatch bowl of a Raven, at the show for $5000. Made by the famous carver Simon Charlie, from the Cowichan tribe in British Columbia, Canada, “Cowichan carvers are known for applying their magnificent mythologies to dramatic, supernatural bird creations,” Eros points out. Also affordable: colorful Tsimshiam and Makah basketry, reflecting interpretations of common themes such as fishing. “Prices are going sky high as the better material becomes scarce,” he adds. “A mask recently went for a half-million dollars at an auction in France. But, the good news is that there is a wealth of material that is infinitely affordable – beautiful baskets, beadwork, pottery and rugs.” Find them at the Sand Point Antique and Design Market.

Sports Themes turn an ordinary room into the extraordinary. In baseball, nothing seals the connection between a fan and a player better than getting an autograph or acquiring a game-used item. Now signed baseball jerseys and old gloves are turning up on walls! Sports themes are a favorite décor choice for a man’s study, or in a boy’s bedroom, as families satisfy a longing to surround themselves with the objects connected with a favorite interest. The look has also leapt into the commercial sector with bars and restaurants using sports elements to their fullest advantage. Imagine creating a focal point for your office with an autographed photograph of Mickey Mantle or Joe DiMaggio, an autographed baseball from Henry Aaron (holder of second place in career home runs) Look for a 1930’s catcher’s outfit, which has all of the items a catcher needs to “Play Ball.”

Yet, sports memorabilia is still a category with lots of affordable material. $10 could get you a fascinating piece of sporting ephemera -- an old photograph, post card, or sheet music.

Set the mood with vintage cocktail shakers and barware -- a hot collectible for 2009. Interest in home entertaining is on the rise, and consumers are furnishing their homes with the accoutrements needed to throw parties and serve cocktails in style. A number of dealers will be featuring delightful cocktail sets. These 50’s sets contain a cocktail shaker with a polished aluminum lid that functions as a strainer, along with different sized highball, whiskey or shot glasses. They come in a range of colors and whimsical decorations. The brilliant cobalt blue sets are embellished with angelfish or windmills. Other favorite motifs were flowers, camels, polar bears, and even dancing sailors. One of the most delightful patterns is the classic Retro-style shaker depicting a herd of pink elephants gleefully dancing and frolicking.

Barware can be broken down into several categories: swizzle sticks, ice buckets, cocktail shakers, shot glasses, regular liquor glasses, and bottle openers. Individual cocktail glasses start at $12. Shakers are in the $75 to $125 range, and ice buckets go for about $35 to $50. Sets are available for $150. If you really let you imagination run wild, you'll find other categories such as artwork, ashtrays, liquor lights/signs, and jewelry.

Show hours for the Sand Point Antique and Design Market are 8:00 am to 10 am for early buyers ($10) and general admission is from 10 am to 4 pm ($6, mention our blog and save a buck) on Sunday August 30th. Of course children 17 and under free. Contact: Dennis Eros at 360-978-4154. We have some selling spaces left and for $130 you can become a dealer !
